To MIT faculty and staff,

After so many months of working and living in unfamiliar ways, this fall presents another new prospect: the full return to campus life. I hear from many of you what I feel myself: a great deal of excited anticipation mixed with a little uncertainty. We are eager to be together again. Yet so much has changed since the start of the pandemic; we know we cannot simply pick up where we left off.

Especially for those who have not been to campus in the past 15 months, diving back in will be a significant transition. You may have many questions about what work, learning and daily life on campus will look like.

To give you a sense of what to expect in September, we are hosting a Town Hall next week.

MIT Town Hall: A virtual community gathering for faculty and staff
Wednesday, June 9
4:00–5:00 p.m. Eastern time

US phone: +1 646 558 8656 or +1 669 900 6833
International numbers
Webinar ID: 92102113653

An ASL interpreter will be available during the webcast.

The webinar video will be available to view shortly after the event.

A range of Institute leaders – listed below – will be on hand to discuss topics including campus access and testing, workspace safety, the vaccine requirement for students and employees, hybrid work and an update on the Work Succeeding initiative on new ways of working.

During the program, you will have an opportunity to submit written questions, and we will answer as many as time allows.

I hope that, in addition to providing practical information, this event can be a first step in our “coming back together.” Life will be different, and we will feel different, in ways none of us can fully predict. Listening to each other’s hopes and concerns now will help us all help each other as we get used to this fresh wave of change and gradually invent this new version of our community.

I encourage you to join us for this town hall – and I look forward to being back together in September.

With enthusiasm,

L. Rafael Reif
